I recently received a phone call from a fellow who requested a consultation. When I asked: What was his problem?” he said that he needed a psych evaluation for a license. I was incredulous and asked: “For a driver’s license?” “No, for a gun license”, he said. I told him that he needed a psychiatrist for that and gave him a number to call. After hanging up, I thought:” What an awesome responsibility–to decide after one or two meetings, or even after a full battery of psychological tests–whether someone is emotionally fit to own a gun”. Even if I had the credentials to make such a determination, I wouldn’t want to do it. No way, I value my sleep.
