In addition to the obvious dangers of distraction, like texting while driving or getting on or off public transportation, there are social and emotional dangers as well. Except for occasions that involve an exchange of information like “I’m running late” or “I’ll meet you @ noon @ the thing by the thing”, texting is impersonal and prone to distortion. For instance, what is the unspoken message of: “I hate you :)”? When I’m asked to engage in an emotionally charged communication through a text, I refuse. Call me if you want to talk and make sure it’s at a time and place where I have your full attention: Not while your driving! That’s insulting. It feels like you have nothing better to do.
