One of the more fascinating dynamics described in my new book, Some People Don’t Want What They Say They Want-100 Unconventional Interventions in Group Therapy, is that of comply-defy. When group members ostensibly go along to get  along and comply with treatment, their hearts not really in it, they will find a way to defy the compliant behavior. For example, in Chapter 18, entitled “Indifference is Rage”, the protagonist, a man I call ‘Ezra’, was scolded by the female group members for leaving the  toilet seat up when he left the bathroom. One woman said, “A gentleman always puts the seat down.” His passive/aggressive response to her request was to put both the seat and the lid down! To the chagrin of the women, this gave him much angry satisfaction.
