Yesterday, I was informed that my proposal to present my book at the Division 49 ( the Group Psychotherapy Section), of the American Psychological Association was rejected for this year’s Annual Conference. While not surprised, I am baffled by the decision. My work is at the cutting edge of the profession; no one before me has written about the frame of treatment as a variable; and that abuses of power can occur when the boundary is blurred between therapy and not therapy. I’d be most interested in knowing what criteria was used, by the selection committee, to make the determination to not accept my proposal. It would appear that once again an organization’s need to maintain the status quo has trumped its need for diversity of opinion, controversy and change.
