It’s called empathy. Some people have a natural proclivity for it; that’s a gift. The rest of us have to cultivate this personality quality. In either case, it’s difficult to control when you’re angry with your mate but it’s essential for a successful relationship. One benefit of group therapy is that it provides an objective forum for members to learn how they come across to others. When someone is myopic in their view of themselves, they often lose sight of the impact of the words and actions on the important people in their lives. Group therapy can help with that. Members find out how others perceive them. If a group member is willing to accept the legitimacy of the feedback, without becoming defensive, they then have mastered a valuable asset for having healthy relationships in their outside of the group relationships. After all, if an entire group tells you that view of yourself is off base, you’d be wise to take it seriously.
