Recently, I received a call from a guy who said he found my name through an internet search.  I asked him, “How can I help you?” He said that he needed a letter from a licensed psychotherapist to vouch for his fitness to own a gun. He asked me, “Will you write a letter for me? I’ll pay you for it.” I flatly said, “No way. Not for all the money in the world. I don’t know you. How could I possibly make such an evaluation for a complete stranger?”  It was a rhetorical question. When he quickly hung up  I wondered, “How many other therapists has he called and how many more is he going to call before he finds someone willing to write  such a letter?”
