It will be 11 years ago this Fall since my mother died. So in her memory, I’d like to recount a light- hearted moment we shared. Toward the end of her life, she became forgetful and fretted that she was losing her mind. This was terrifying to her. One Sunday afternoon, as we drove to our regular weekend lunch together she asked me this question. She said: ” If an old woman like me with a failing memory, came to your office for a consultation, what would you recommend?” I thought for a moment and said:” I’d recommend that you pay me in advance”. She laughed, and for a moment, we both forgot about the inevitable.
